I bought two of McDaniel's books at once after a friend recommended him before I'd read anything by him at all. When I began reading this I thought, oh no, I might not like these poems. And there were a couple poems I didn't love, but I deeply enjoyed so many of them. He's funny and dark, has great metaphors and turns of phrase, and all relatable. Looking forward to book #2.

Not much joy. Good book, though.

2016 Reading Challenge: A book of poetry. I feel like I'm being harsh for giving this book 3 stars, but it's not out of meanness. I enjoyed the poems, but I do think I enjoyed The Endarkenment and The Forgiveness Parade. Of course, there are definitely poems in here that really get you when you're not looking; poem beginning with a line from Bob Dylan's "Subterranean Homesick Blues" cut through me like a knife.
