Now, I liked Truth and Bright Water and I loved the Massey Lectures. Thomas King at his best inspires empathy and makes you shift your perspective and question your assumptions. There are flashes of brilliance here, but I found a lot of this poetry to be quite on-the-nose. A quote from one of the poems I liked that seemed at odds with much of the book:

Don't read between the lines,
she says,
as he reaches her side,
knowing all the while that this is where
the best stories hide.

This was such a wonderful poetry book that managed to be both extremely impactful and meaningful in so few words yet also so concise and easy to read. This was a rare balance that was found here!

I don't tend to read much poetry but this was fantastic. I picked it up after hearing an interview with Thomas King reading from it and was so moved.

I just finished reading The Inconvenient Indian by Thomas King, and immediately knew I wanted to read more from him. This book superceded my already high expectations.

77 Fragments of a Familiar Ruin is the most intricate, layered and breathtaking collection of poems I've ever had the pleasure of reading. The themes, the stories between the lines, and the ties that bind them together are so clever and well done that you can't help but be in awe. I'm speechless.
