Sadly, this is by far my least favourite Reacher book to date - I'm a superfan but came so close to DNF this, which is unheard of!

The plot twist seemed obvious, the villain was a caricature, and Reacher is completely character assassinated as a love-sick idiot (and a bit of a perve.
If I have to hear one more time about him fantasising about a 15 year old sister figure, I'm going to throw all my books out the window. Thank fuck his and Jodie's romance is abandoned in future books
).

My only thoughts are that this is one of the earlier books (book #3 in the series), so now the series was established they were trying to get a better sense of who Reacher is as a character and hadn't quite worked it out yet. Or were experimenting with something different to ensure the books stayed fresh, but missed the mark. Either way, it hasn't aged anywhere near as well as the rest.

The 2.5 stars are because despite it all, I'm a Reacher fan for life and the core plot was still interesting - plus I loved Marylyn's character.

I liked the audiobook narrator. Although this is the 3rd book in the Jack Reacher series, it can be read as a standalone. A private investigator named Costello goes to the Florida Keys to look for Reacher. When Costello winds up dead, Reacher begins investigating who hired him. He reconnects with Jodie Garber, the daughter of his old commanding officer. Jodie and Reacher resume the investigation that Leo Garber started before he died. They are trying to find out what happened to Victor Hobie in the Vietnam War (body never recovered).

I thought it was kind of an eerie book because many scenes take place on the 88th floor of the World Trade Center. I was also kind of grossed out by the number of times Reacher talks about how beautiful Jodie was when he knew her when she was 15 years old. Yikes. (There is a 9 year age difference between them.) Hobie having a book for a hand as a villain felt a bit too cliché, but I think it worked for the book. Some things in the book are a bit dated, but I was still able to enjoy the book.

A fun Reacher novel was spoiled for me by the brutal violence and torture.

Tripwire is an excellent work by Lee Child. It's very different from Killing Floor or Die Trying, but it's better.

In the Keys, a private investigator shows up at a bar to talk with Reacher, and the PI ends up dead, presumably killed by the *other* guys who showed up a few hours later, also looking for Reacher. So starts a race against the clock that involves classified missions in Vietnam, and a power broker who's after far more than power or money. And a secret that dates to the jungles of Vietnam, the sort of secret that the US government and the power broker would do anything to make sure stays secret.
