Rose is so different from the rest of the Bone series; even though it follows several familiar characters, it's easy to forget that this is the same story. I think that's mostly because of the illustrations. Charles Vess did the artwork for this one, and his style is so different that it feels wrong for a story like Bone. While the scenery is beautiful, I couldn't get used to the way the characters looked. Every now and then, though, I did have to stop and just admire a gorgeous landscape. Vess' art gives this installment a real fairytale feeling, which ends up working well overall. The main reason I'm rating Rose as low as I am is for its depressing ending.
SpoilerWhy did the dog have to die? She did so much more for Rose than Briar ever did. *cries*

This was a hot mess and a huge disappointment. If you love the original Bone series, I not recommend reading this prequel on Rose.

A good prequel to the Bone series, but i don't recommend reading it before the Bone books. Art and style of the book was good. Didn't care much for the character of Briar, it felt stilted.

Story was good and sad.

Rose gives a detailed historic account of the historic fall out between Rose and Briar that eventually leads to the events in the Bone saga. I really enjoyed the story, and, as always, Jeff Smith's mythologies and characters feel immensely original and timeless at once. I am not a huge fan of the less cartoony Vess art, I found it distracting. This story is also stripped of all the comic elements so characteristic of the Bone books, which I missed. Still a great read.

In the 4th grade I remember reading this at 6am and bawling my eyes out from the ending. I loathed Rose for her decision and I still do.

This was a bit disappointing. It's a prequel to the Bone series that I just think was unnecessary. I might have liked it better as it's own thing but I felt some elements didn't make sense within the context of the rest of Bone. Also the art was not great. The original series was drawn by the writer, Jeff Smith, and I don't know why they got a different artist for this one. The characters' faces were inconsistent from panel to panel which was really distracting. Still an interesting story though.
