ALRIGHT!!! this book might just have done something to my brain.
I feel like it just washed my brain with soap, someone knows that feeling? well, it's something I get only when I read a good book and this one is really good, if you ask me.

Now, this novel didn't go as I thought. And that surprised me. I believe that if it did go the way I was thinking of, then I would have given it 5 stars, but whatever, we can't have a perfect book, can we?

I'm disappointed at the lack of gore, I mean, the plot and the book's title suggested me that some violence was going to happen between the girls, but eh it's not EXACTLY like that.

Anyways, if you are looking for a good portrait of girlhood, read this book.
It captures feelings that us, girls, know a little too well, and are not as well known to men. The desire to be special, the need to feel seen and be touched, the shame that follows, the weird feeling that follows every girl around, the eyes watching, always, the constant and hurting performance of girlhood.
I found it poetic, and realistic. Even the traumatic experience the girls live, the evilness of some characters, the cruelty of motherhood are beautifully written.

The last few chapters are confusing, and from what I have read online, I'm not the only one who had troubles with them. So, don't be afraid to look up explanations if some stuff seems to be left unsaid.
I believe this book has many layers and to get through them properly, a deep read is required.

"He was the only person I ever loved who I didn't immediately want to destroy"
"What is a mother or a daughter who is not beautiful or good?"
"I just want to be able to love simply"

The sticky nostalgia of summer, the longing ache of girlhood, the intoxicating “we” of friendship defined by trauma, circumstance and secrets.

An ephemeral, hazy fever dream.

Poignant, brutal and effective prose.

This will absolutely not be for everyone. The fog never settles, but personally I think the central “what happened?” is pretty clear.

The sudden shift from the collective to the individual POV near the end was violent and effective.

had some interesting characters and a cool vibe, but was sort of all over the place at times - felt almost like it wasn’t entirely sure which direction it wanted to go in, but overall enjoyed it!
