The ending was not my favourite
it wasn’t bad either I suppose but then again
I think if it were written more R rated I would have 5 starred it
story’s way too mild for what’s happening
there was a lot of potential for real terror
but yeah the way it went wasn’t really what I wanted
but I did enjoy the way it was written.
and the writing style.
I also liked the 3 stark povs: Victim, potential victim/love interest, and the daughter.
I also liked the random snippets of his other victims.
3.5 almost 4

#StoryGraph: fiction thriller dark emotional tense crime-fiction serial-killers
320 pages • first pub 2023 • 4.5 stars
Aidan Thomas is an upstanding man, a hard worker, a good neighbor, always ready to help. So say the people in his small hometown. Rachel, Cecilia, and Emily, the three females in his life, would have a different story to tell. That is if they were able to get away from the psychological hold, this man has on them. The Quiet Tenant exposes the madness of a serial killer as told by the women who are captivated by him. Can they escape before it’s too late?
Description
When Aidan’s wife dies, he and his 13-year-old daughter Cecilia are forced to move. Aidan has no choice but to bring Rachel along, introducing her to Cecilia as a “family friend” who needs a place to stay. After five years of captivity, Aidan is betting on Rachel being too brainwashed and fearful to attempt to escape. But Rachel is a fighter and survivor, and recognizes Cecilia might just be the lifeline she has waited for all these years. As Rachel tests the boundaries of her new living situation, she begins to form a tenuous connection with Cecilia. And when Emily, a local restaurant owner, develops a crush on the handsome widower, she finds herself drawn into Rachel and Cecilia’s orbit, coming dangerously close to discovering Aidan’s secret.
Told through the perspectives of Rachel, Cecilia, and Emily, The Quiet Tenant explores the psychological impact of Aidan’s crimes on the women in his life–and the bonds between those women that give them the strength to fight back. Both a searing thriller and an astute study of trauma, survival, and the dynamics of power, The Quiet Tenant is an electrifying debut thriller by a major talent.

The Quiet Tenant was easy to devour! The shorter chapters, alternating main povs and bonus povs kept me reading and I knew I needed to finish in 1 day to hear the rest of "Rachel's" story.
I found it interesting that our abducter used "Rachel" for his in home control and then fulfilled his other urges outside the home, but those stories weren't part of the main plot. That was a bit of a letdown because it meant that his storyline with our main character was a bit, well dull. It lacked the excitement and thrill that this genre usually has and the ending was expected. While I did find myself needing to turn the page to hear the rest, I didn't feel fulfilled by the end and was just left with unanswered questions.
All that being said, I still enjoyed the journey and would rec to those looking for a fast paced read. I look forward to hearing more from this author.
Thank you NetGalley for my early copy!

This isn’t awful, exactly, but it really frustrated me. I can only handle so many chapters of tedious acquiescence from characters governed, mostly understandably, by self-pity, nervousness, giddiness, and apologia. I mean, it’s a book about one victim after another (and one absurdly, desperately infatuated loser) of a surprisingly incompetent serial imprisoner and murderer of women. I sort of like some of its style choices; Michallon alternates points of view across her psycho’s myriad victims, giving us an idea of the stages of life of women in his life. But, they are all so samey, and the story so preposterous and high concept, that her formal invention achieves nothing. I enjoyed its final hour or so, but it’s otherwise repetitive and dramatically lifeless.
This was very good!! I loved the short chapters that kept you turning the page. I loved the multiple POVs from the people that mattered and nothing from the guy who didn’t.
My only issue…I wanted a twist!! I wanted to be wowed by the ending and I just wasn’t…
Still a very entertaining and bingeable read!
