Interesting gender dynamics, but felt as if it was full of hastily filled plot holes.
Reread this for the fourth? fifth? time. Still as much of a favorite as it was the first time I read it as a teen!

If you are looking for a book that offers strange places, characters and events, then look no further.
The story is not the best but I absolutely loved getting lost in the world and the ideas and the art. It was a great reading experience and gave me a break from the usual stuff.
Would highly recommend if you are looking for something different and that would inspire creativity and imagination.

This was good in middle school and it's still good.

Wow, what an adventure! My younger self would have devoured this book and then demanded to read the next in the series. Barker's imagination is unparallel and a delight to read.
Candy Quakenbush lives in the most boring town in America, and her life is sad and a bit depressing, with a drunken father who sometimes beats her up and a mother who doesn't stand up to defend her. Suddenly, this Minnesota town witnesses a miracle and a sea emerges, a sea where Candy throws herself into, and thus starts her adventure to the Abarat, a place where every island is an hour.
Really amazing story, in the way fantasy used to be when I grew up: clean, with some innocence despite the evilness, and truly engrossing.
A masterpiece.

One of the better dark fantasy novels I've read. Very much in the tradition of "Alice in Wonderland" or Lovecraft's "The Dream-Quest of Unknown Kadath." Filled with Barker's unique imagination and masterful writing style.
