Not what I remembered. A little disappointing on the reread :(

It was wonderfully strange! I didn't realize it was a series, and I will see what I can do to find the rest of the books.

I love the picture version of this book. If/when you read it, I highly suggest you pick up the version with the artwork. Not only are the pictures gorgeous, but I love looking at the interpretations of the weirdness in Abarat. And with the pictures as my guide, it was as if I was actually in Abarat too. The journey the book took me on was enthralling, I wish I could go there and explore it too.

I actually gave up. I think I might like this book if I sat down and read it, but the audiobook just wasn't working for me. Too many characters and strange things happening for me to keep track of - my mind kept wandering and then I had no idea what was going on.

I loved this book as a teen. I was lucky enough to have the one with his illustrations and it was like Van Gogh painted a Dr. Seuss story. The fantastically beautiful and often morbid and creepifying creatures and scenes in this magical land where every island remains a different time of day inspired me and made my imagination do back bends to understand it. I don't think I have given it enough of a chance, though. It is very much the first part of a story and I haven't yet finished the trilogy. I should really read the rest to see Candy's complete destiny.
