I honestly really enjoyed this book. Scarlett is a good protagonist and I liked the magical feel of the series. One of my favourite parts was the concept of having to give up days of your life as payment. I’m a sucker for magical games and fairs/carnivals/circuses amusement park concepts though. Her writing is very purple so I could see why people wouldn’t like it.
Scarlette and donetetta are abused by their father and are using the carnival to give them what they want in getting away from their father. I see complaints about lack of character development and world building. I get the character development complaint, it’s not great. The world building I thought was fine since it’s just at the carnival. I could visual it with all its purple prose.

This was magical and whimsical and I loved it. I couldn't put this down particularly towards the end. I liked that you never really knew what was real and not .
I really felt like Scarlett should have been more angry and both Tella and Julian. Tella especially - she lied and manipulated her. AND then faked her death. Scarlett held her dead body - that just isnt okay.
I cant wait to read the rest of the series.

Really enjoyable book. Would give it 5 stars but I thought the end was a little strange? Unexpected and slightly underwhelming/unbelievable/confusing. But overall great book. Looking forward to the next one. Especially love a sister relationship!
