I always love reading books from Alice Hoffman. She is a fabulous author who really has a knack for writing fiction in the most captivating way. This book was no different! I love how many of her books have this undertone of how to get past the worst part of your life. It touched on the issue of being a person of Jewish descent in Spain during the time of the Crusades.
I'm always eager for more Alice Hoffman, so I was delighted to find some of her shorter works in my library's audiobook section. And really, I could not ask for a better story than the one I found in INCANTATION.
The story is short, but beautiful. Every sentence has hidden depths; every word is a poem. The imagery is astounding in its brilliance, and the prose made my heart ache with the beauty, wonder, and the tragedy of it all. INCANTATION is the perfect remedy and spice for readers overfull of YA dystopia that's about big blockbuster teenage rebellion. Hoffman is all subtlety and craft. This book is a spell that will make you weep as it hugs you comforting close.

This is an amazing book, it had me pulled it from page one. This would a great read for high school kids, it's informative and ignites a desire to learn more about the world that Estrella lived in. As always Alice Hoffman's writing is breath taking.

Read this one in about a day, "Incantation" by Alice Hoffman. Hoffman is my favorite author for several reasons. She's written prolifically, and her books center women's stories, history, spiritualism, self-empowerment, and often Judaism. I love immersing myself in these worlds and feeling my power as a woman through the legacy of these women of old. All women are connected, and Hoffman's books help you feel this connection. The last line of the book (no spoilers) is "Remember me." Hoffman's books help readers to remember the stories of all these women from history and take their hard-earned power into themselves. This book was short and sweet, and just what I needed after reading "You" aka the creepiest most male-centered book in history. I needed this book, and it helped to center me
Such a gorgeous book! I read this last May, and now have found my copy… Incantation is the one of the best historical novels that I have ever read! I couldn't put it down… Incantation is thrilling, beautiful, and just… unexplainable!
Update: Even better the second time reading it!
