An amazing, complicated love story that spans many years. Shows how non-traditional families can make it work. Great story of love from many angles!

This one made my heart ache in a way that only a really well-told story can. Having just finished it moments ago, I imagine I am still processing it and I don’t quite have the words. Heavier than the others, but wow.

I breezed through what I thought would be a easy, light novel but it surprised me by being a much deeper story. It is a story of friendship, betrayal, and forgiveness. It was very well written and my first book by author Camille Pagan. I will definitely be reading more of her books.

Spoilers.

Very easy read- tells the story of a man who is writing a book to his daughter, almost in a “how I met your mother” sort of way. The last 30 pages, I bawled. Like tears steaming down my face. It’s not a deep book, and I wouldn’t say it’s a happy book either, but it left me thinking about things. I liked that the love story didn’t end how I wanted it to- it made it more real. (That being said, the dialogue at times felt super unreal- no one talks like that. ;) )

I picked this for a book club book and I’m eager to see what type of discussions we’ll have.

I wasn't expecting much and ended up not being able to put this book down. The characters were well layered and realistic. I liked that Pagan didn't overly detail mundane events.

Another instance where I finished the book in two days, just not back to back. Couldn’t put it down - I really loved this book. A story of love and unconventional normality that makes the reader want to keep reading to find out what happens. I really enjoyed how the story was a span of 10+ years and showed the growth and hardships, love and loss the characters endured throughout that time span. The twist towards the end of the book was unexpected, but made the book even better. I also liked how the whole book is read as a story to someone (won’t spoil who). It makes it that much better and hits you right in the feels. I definitely cried at some parts, not gonna lie! Would definitely recommend.

The last chapter earned the third star, but it was a struggle otherwise. James has to be one of the most unlikeable protagonists ever.

Edit: Thought about it more and back to the original two star rating. The ending is manipulative. Of course the reader will have an emotional response when .

The rest of the book is so bad any empathy is impossible.

I don't really know how I feel about this book other than that it made me sad. One common theme throughout this novel seemed to be fleeting happiness. It's somber and matter of fact take on life's trials and tribulations I suppose is realistic, but sometimes I appreciate the element of escape. I also didn't see the turn of events coming that would occur in the last quarter of the novel, but I suppose it fit in with the overall current of bad timing that seemed to run through this story.
