This retelling of the Titanic sinking looks at the social and cultural norms that changed during and as a result of the era the sinking occurred. The aspects of the book are told through the lens of following seven families, some with survivors some without, who traveled upon the Titanic. It addresses some myths as well as some facts and curiosities.

This book is *heavy.*

I would not recommend it as a first or even second book about the Titanic. This is for those of us who want to know more about the world outside the ship, the economics and politics and societal happenings surrounding the disaster. There is so much information in these pages that if you're trying to keep track of the actual ship in addition to all of its passengers and crew, you're going to have to read every page 3 times.

This book, these heavy pages, lulled me to sleep many times. That's the only reason for the 4 stars. I loved the information I was reading, but the tone gets so complicated and in some places so textbook, that sleep came easy.

That said, I really loved all of the information I was reading. There is a ton of background and context included that isn't found in the average account, and that's lovely. I appreciate this book wielding its status as published in 2019 to compare accounts and probabilities and facts of what was found in the wreck to systematically prove or disprove myths. It does a solid job.

Meticulously researched, almost to the point where the book can be hard to follow. But after adjusting a bit to the Author’s style, I found the book surprisingly riveting! Scenes from the sinking were chilling, and lingered with me. I thought the literary connections to the Edwardian Era came in fits and starts and I wanted more. Nevertheless, this is a must read for Titanic nuts.
