I had high expectations since I'd heard so much about him. But found the book almost boring.

The writing is the same high standard, the dialogue is beautiful, but the female characters in Le Carre’s books just get more and more wooden.

Gave up halfway when he “smelt the juices” of the mystical cryptic big boobied forbidden Russian chick he boned.
Confused mess, quite shocked for a Le Carre.

Another excellent read from the Le Carré catalogue, this is another I had read some time ago in paperback and revisited due to a Kindle offer.
The story is of it's time - mid-late 90's, so to some it might seem a bit dated, and the House of Single something of an anachronism in todays world of high-frequency trading, derivatives and the like. In some ways, the House of Single is more a fixers shop than a financial institution in the modern sense. That said, the characters are well rounded, and the scenery once again beautifully articulated - particularly those of the Caucasus. Oliver as the main protagonist is easy to like, and even if he is somewhat reminiscent of other Le Carré characters of the post-war era, that's easily forgiven. Well worth the revisit for me, and I would recommend it for a fan of Le Carré or someone who enjoys winding thrillers.

This was billed as le Carre's best book in years...but I'm not really sure why, outside of advertising. It was highly predictable, there was very little character development outside the main character.
On top of that, the book lacked excitement. Even the climax was anti-climactic.
