dark sad tense slow-paced

Maybe a 3.5. I enjoyed “Room” much more and thought this one moved a bit slow. Enjoyed the heavy Irish and Catholic influence of the story line.
dark mysterious sad slow-paced

I couldn’t race through the book quick enough to find out what was going on. A few little surprises at the end. I enjoyed it but it did go on a bit. One I won’t forget

Was a difficult read in the sense of reading in the point of view as a Englishperson speaking about Irish people. Gross stereotypes echoed throughout which was the point I supposed. I just could not turn off the disgust I had for the protagonist.
I believe the ending was a bit rushed. A lot of fluff in the beginning which I believe could have been cut to build up the finale.

Very engaging, I finished it in 2 days. The only reason I didn’t give it a 5* rating was I didn’t cry. Once the twist was revealed it drug for a chapter. But still, that was minor and the book is well worth a read!
challenging dark mysterious reflective sad tense

I didn't guess the ending, so I guess the author succeeded in telling her tale. However, it seemed like too convenient a trope and left me feeling unsatisfied. The main character is wholly unlikable until the very end, when suddenly her character does a 180. The back story why she suddenly changes is explained in just a few sentences and makes the protagonist's character more one-dimensional rather than less.
