Great audiobook. Some of my favorite lectures and speeches were the The Nobel lecture of literature and Sarah Lawrence Speech 1988

I really struggle with collections just because there are always sections I really enjoy and others that fall flat and so I can never rate it as high as I would’ve liked. I think this collection definitely could have done with more editing, I know this is pulling speeches by Toni Morrison and recycling paragraphs in various speeches is totally okay. In a collection of speeches though, the recycled paragraphs get really repetitive and a bit distracting when you’re thinking you’ve read this earlier in the book.

I also think I messed up by reading this before any other works by Toni Morrison. There were a few sections based on her novels and so for me they didn’t mean as much as they would have if I’ve read her other works so far. Some of her sections really rang true especially with the state of the country today and other conflicts occurring worldwide. It’s definitely a very important collection of works and I appreciated some of them, but others not so much which led to me feeling like the collection as a whole was a bit dull. I’ll definitely be picking up some of her fiction works, and maybe after reading those i’ll have a better perspective for this collection.

Too dense/academic for the timeframe I had to read it in.

Had to return to the library. Plan to pick it up again when the mood next strikes.
