Perhaps it is always restful to be around someone who does not expect anything from you beyond what is in your nature.

The Folk were of another world, with its own rules and customs—and to a child who always felt ill-suited to her own world, the lure was irresistible.

A very cute book with a cosy, journal-style format and strong lore running through it. I loved the mix of whimsy and darkness, especially how the fairies weren’t softened or sentimental (they were strange, sometimes cruel) and it worked. The protagonist felt real: complex, slightly autistic-coded, and never too polished. The storytelling theme hit home, though the pacing felt a bit uneven and I wanted more emotional weight between Emily and Wendell. Still, it was charming and original, and I’ll definitely read the next one.
