A true journal that make take some getting used to in order to get started, but once you're in you're stuck. Emily brings the awkward, oblivious academic who is too obsessed with her research to realize social norms/cues. Wendell is the super charismatic lover boy who is constantly cleaning up after her as he rips out his hair. Drama and hilarity ensues.

I struggled with this review, mainly because I enjoyed the book, I loved the style of a journal and the writing style.
I loved Emily and Wendells dynamic/relationship and banter, and Shadow. And throughly enjoyed learning about the Folk and the villagers. I loved how fast paced it was and it made for an easy read in one sitting.
I was about 70% through and thinking this was going to be a 4 star book when Emily's actions made me dislike her. I understand she doesn't like people, and she is a very self-centered and stubborn person and yet there were things I didn't like about her.Burning the toy, her going off on her own, putting everyone who risked their life ar risk when she woke the king and then refused thier plan was something I couldn't really forgive her for, even though everything worked out in the end
I'll read book two, in the hopes she changes, but the lack of character development disappointed me.

A light en interesting fantasy read. It wasn’t predictable and sometimes even a bit dark. I really liked it, the characters are interesting and it’s beautiful to see everyone and everything grow and evolve. The townfolk and Emily’s interactions with them for example.
slow-paced
