This book has got AMBIANCE! It was a little challenging reading this in Arizona during the summer. I had to wait until night to read, blazing summer days just don't have the right vibe for this books chilly frozen landscape. That said there were plenty of chills to be had even in the summer heat. I love that the Fairies in this book are molded on the ACTUAL folktales. The fae here are unsettling and inhuman, they have a sense of "otherness" beyond human comprehension. And then you have Bambleby, who is as close to a golden retriever as a fae can be. His attachment to Emily is hilarious, and their interactions are a joy to read. Emily herself is a bit of a strange and unsettling lady. Honestly, she seems more at home amongst the Folks than amongst her own kind often times.
The WHIMSY.
This book has such beautiful writing in it. I'm obsessed with Emily & Wendell's relationship - definitely hungry to read on about that in the next book. If you're looking for something fantastical (albeit a bit dark/twisted), I'd highly recommend this! I picked it up thinking it might be a nice spring read, but it takes place at the start of winter.... so keep that in mind.
5/5 ⭐

If I hadn't listened to one of my favorite podcasts talk about this book I would never have read it. All I hear people say about it is that it's cozy romantasy, and actually it's neither of those things. Calling it that is a disservice.
Yeah, there's a romance but it's not the main plot. Most of the book is actually about Emily's research into fairies. Best parts of the book. There are even some footnotes with extra info in some chapters. They gradually disappear as the book goes on, which is a shame because I really enjoyed them.
The romance was cute. Wendell reminds me a lot of book Howl Pendragon, whole I don't like. But what prevents him from being too annoying are the moments where hes at his least human like behavior. He gets some beastly moments. In one scene he decapitates a dude, in another tears some fairies in half. Those are the best Wendell moments.
The fairies themselves are the thing that prevents this book from being saccharine. They get to do plenty of fucked up stuff on and off screen. The fairies that look the most human like get to show how truly inhumane they are. Which for me is a requirement for a good fairy story. If they are normal people what's the point.
I'm planning on reading the rest of the series
