Was there an editor? A beta reader? A friend that told this author this book is probably a draft sure read like one I was confused then I lost interest
Strong character development: No

I binged the audiobook for this in less than 24 hours!

Von is officially one of my new morally grey book boyfriends! I found Sage to be really relatable as a character and I loved her sassiness.

I cannot wait to read the second book as I feel like with this debut novel Jaclyn is just warming up!

4.5/5

This book is a ride. I loved the characters that Jaclyn created. She does a wonderful job of giving readers exactly what we are looking for a badass FMC, a sexy morally grey MMC, and a cast of fantastic side characters.

The journey that Sage went on -- she had wonderful character growth as she met challenges and battled against strong foes. The spice was *chef's kiss* and the plot for a dark, ride that left me craving more.

I really enjoyed this book! It was a well written romantic fantasy, with a strong magic system, and interesting culture/deities.

There were a lot of modern references woven in, which usually I don't love with a fantasy book, but it really fit the tone of the story, and it gave it a lighter, more casual feel, considering the darker tones of the romance and political storyline.

I struggled at times to keep track of the religions and gods that were discussed, but this was possibly due to listening to the audio rather than reading. At times I felt like I would have liked a glossary of the old and new gods to refer back to, but this could have revealed parts of the story too early on, so I can appreciate why this isn't included.

I did predict part of the big plot twist at the end, but there were elements that I didn't see coming and really surprised me, which I loved. I have a lot of unanswered questions going into book two and I can't wait to dive right in and get some answers!

I listened to the audiobook of this and it was really excellent, the narrators did an excellent job bringing the characters to life and really engaging me in the story. The way the book was written, with the casual tone and banter between characters as well as in the main character's thoughts, really translated well into the audio.

DNF for me.

I think I need to take a break from romantasy because they all feel the same lately. I had high hopes for this one based off how the author advertised it on Instagram but this one isn't for me either.. side note- the authors own promotion spoiled the reveal for me so I knew about it going into it.

There's just nothing original here. I hate the trend of promoting books with their tropes because it feels like authors pick those tropes and then write the book based around those. Shadow daddy? Check. Fated mates? Check. Enemies to lovers? Check. But those tropes mean nothing when there's little to no world building, the characters aren't fleshed out, and the plot feels like an after thought.

And the writing didn't fit the old school fantasy setting in some instances which breaks immersion for me. Such as when the FMC is finding out life changing details and her response is "chuck that in the fuck-it-bucket."

This book isn't the worst but i I wouldn't say its worth the read either.
