DNF for me.
I think I need to take a break from romantasy because they all feel the same lately. I had high hopes for this one based off how the author advertised it on Instagram but this one isn't for me either.. side note- the authors own promotion spoiled the reveal for me so I knew about it going into it.
There's just nothing original here. I hate the trend of promoting books with their tropes because it feels like authors pick those tropes and then write the book based around those. Shadow daddy? Check. Fated mates? Check. Enemies to lovers? Check. But those tropes mean nothing when there's little to no world building, the characters aren't fleshed out, and the plot feels like an after thought.
And the writing didn't fit the old school fantasy setting in some instances which breaks immersion for me. Such as when the FMC is finding out life changing details and her response is "chuck that in the fuck-it-bucket."
This book isn't the worst but i I wouldn't say its worth the read either.

On the continent of Edenvale, possessing magic is a death sentence, a curse. Sage is one among the Cursed, living a secluded, peaceful life in a cozy cottage with her adoptive family. When her brother is recruited to go to war in name of the king against the Cursed rebels, Sage must join forces with those very rebels to get him back. Sage finds herself inexplicably drawn to the dark, mysterious leader of the group but little does she know, fate has come to play and the gods themselves watch her every move.
This is a fantastic debut novel. I devoured this book in two sittings. Jaclyn shocked me from the very first chapter, sucking me into the story immediately, and I came out the other side left with a fierce need for book two! This book was well written and fast paced. It had a great cast of side characters, fun banter, delicious tension, and plot twists that kept me turning pages and needing more.
Tropes you’ll find in this book include:
-Fated mates
-Forced proximity
-Morally grey MMC
-Elemental magic
-Gods/Goddesses
If you are a fan of any of the above, or the fantasy romance genre in general, than I highly recommend you read this book! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

OH MY GOSH!!!!!!!
This freaking book!
This book is so much more than meets the eye. As you go you unearth more and more to the world and characters
I loved how you could tell there was always something you didn’t know. I was so sucked in because I wanted to learn more and more about the characters
You will absolutely fall in love with all of the characters and feel excited to learn more about them in the next books
The world building in this book is very light and sets up a lot to be learned in the next book
The romance and spice are simply divine and the ending is a BOMBSHELL, it’ll blow your mind and you won’t be able to wait for the next book

i actually finished this just so i could confidently say its amongst the five worst books ive ever read and im not even a very picky reader. the dialogue, the underdeveloped plot, THE INNER MONOLOGUES OMG, the characters, the choice of words... everything about this book was just so so bad. the world building was bizarre, convenient things just happened because they had to, the relationships and the characters were so incredibly unrealistic. i won't even comment on the romance because where tf would i even start but a found family trope done in the span of a couple of weeks when all they've gone through together is a roadtrip?
now for the sake of not sounding too mean there were a couple of things i liked about this book. by a couple of things i mean ezra and the family dynamic between ezra, sage and kaleb. the interactions between them all felt genuine and the relationship was built fairly well. it says a lot when the loss of the LOVE INTEREST feels like nothing to you but the loss of the brother actually kind of breaks your heart lol. also the advisor dude was fine i guess. at least as far as characters in this book go.
im not going to actively wait around for the next book but hey im not above reading it if im ever randomly reminded that this book exists. i have no social life.

This book I should have DNF but I wanted to give it a chance. It was terrible, I don't often give 1 ⭐ but this, it was just plain bad. there was so much potential for a good book but it was completely missed.

This book has been on my TBR for so long and I’m kicking myself for not reading it sooner! The events starting literally on the first page snagged my attention and didn’t let go for most of the rest of book. Our MCs banter is oh so good and had me snickering more often than not. The world that is created here is stunning, and I can’t wait to find out more about the magic system.
Thankful that book 2 releases soon, because I need it!
