DNF at 60%.
DO NOT dive into the author’s socials before reading this book. Her posts spoil this book. I didn’t realize how badly it was spoiled, but she really does throw out the big reveal moments in her promotional posts. Makes all the foreshadowing and build up of a mystery completely pointless.
Every time Sage internally questions something she writes it off immediately. She never digs into anything that seems off or questionable. OR something could be obvious and she has no reaction or thought whatsoever. Like it’s completely normal. To me it just comes off as a poor way for the author to keep the mystery going.
Also really bothered by so much modern language in a setting that is very much not modern.
“Body count” “smut books” it just doesn’t match the rest of the world.
Von has been written so superficially so far. There’s been zero depth explored to his character. He’s just all super quotable MMC moments. And if I have to read another copy and paste description of him from Sage’s POV - “obsidian eyes, dark hair in a top not, tight leather pants” we get it, he’s dark and sexy.
The plot is also very weak. The setup of this book is to find her brother, but at 60% we are no closer to finding anything out or getting to him than at the beginning. Which would be fine I guess if the weird mysteries and cryptic shit being said to Sage also had some movement and reveals. Instead.. it’s just a lot of nothing.

While the world was well-crafted and interesting, the plot during the first half of the book moved at a lightning speed. Side characters and their relationships with the FMC weren’t developed, but instead handed to us on a silver platter. At around the halfway point, the book slowed down a bit and finally let me breathe and get invested, but I felt like I missed a lot of important character development due to the quick paced nature of the first half.
The cliffhanger was good, and did make me want to continue reading the series, but I sincerely hope there will be time for me to settle into the world in the next book.

Okay, I absolutely loved this story. I found myself getting so wrapped up in it that I forgot to highlight my favorite lines.
Between Life & Death was a very unique story. Very different from most fantasy stories out right now. Idk if it was just me but I got a lot of ACOTAR, some FBAA, and Avatar the Last Airbender vibes (but that in particular came from the elemental magic aspect of the story).
I like that the magic aspect of the story was more elemental and not just raw and untethered magic blasting out of everyone’s fingertips.
I absolutely loved Sage. She is real and raw. She is fierce and can handle her own, she loves hard, and fights for people that cannot fight for themselves.
Von though, woof. I mean, if Rhysand and Cassian had a love child then we would receive Daddy Von, and I am totally here for it. He was sexy and sensual and a complete mystery the whole entire book.
My biggest issue was wondering why the strongest and highest ranked rebel warriors would drop everything to help Sage find her brother. But after learning everything we learn about Von and Sage it made more sense.
And the cliffhanger. Ugh. My life is ruined.

Ahhhhhhh this book. So I really loved the MMC and the lore.
But it was just a bit to overcomplicated for me. I liked the FMC as well but I felt like I didnt know her very well?
The side cast were fantastic! I think the plot was good but it got a little confusing, the idea is amazing but I dnt think it came across as great as it could have been.
It was deffo a fun read and il still be picking up book 2 and seeing whats going to happen!
