MMC and FMC were INSUFFERABLE. You don’t even have to guess ever twist because the author just tells you! And it’s made even more insufferable by the main character taking 10 chapters to figure out what we were told 10 chapters earlier. Don’t get me wrong, the end twist is good. It’s just sooooo predictable. It’s a poorly written romance disguised as a fantasy book <3

Saw the twists in the book coming, but the characters and story line kept me engaged and excited to see what comes next.

DID NOT FINISH: 44%

I was enjoying this book in the begining but then characters/enemies were coming out of nowhere for no clear reason. The plot started to annoy me and it felt like lazy writing at that point. I enjoyed the dynamic between Freya and Bjorn (he's super flirty) but that was the only redeeming quality of this book and ultimately I decided it wasn't enough to continue.

Personally, I despise when authors throw random shit in to move the plot forward and things come out of nowhere. I can't deal with plot inconsistency so as soon as that happened I no longer cared about the book at all. I forgave it once when oh so conveniently all the jarls were meeting to sacrifice to the gods on a mountain and Snorri would somehow 'get power' by Freya- very unclear how that was gonna work out considering all the jarls were wanting to kill him? The dnf point was when there was conveniently another super secret and dangerous second path filled with dead people to get up said mountain that only Freya and Bjorn went on for some reason. I'm sad because I was enjoying Bjorn and the viking vibes- reminded me of The Last Kingdom!

It was okay. Would've enjoyed it a lot more if the author hadn't written the book as if her readers already knew all about Norse mythology and Viking culture. I thought the book was interesting, but I would've enjoyed it a lot more if she'd taken the time to delve in-depth into all the mythology and related details. Also, one thing that really annoyed me was that every time she called Freya—Freya, Erik's daughter—but had no problem calling another character, Ivar Rolfsson. Freya's name, according to Norse naming conventions, should be Freya Eriksdóttir. Not to mention, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't have called her Freya at all because it's too similar to Freyja, and that could've been seen as an affront to the gods, Freyja specifically. Why not call her Freydis?

Freya also just came off as a horny housewife a good chunk of the time, tbh. I saw the two traitors coming from a mile away.

I am 100% hoping she fucks everyone up in book two, tho. Because everyone SUCKS
