This was technically a re-read. I first read this in my mid-20’s and it had a profound impact on how I approached stories and the world. Reading it again at a very different time in my life, I still think that it is very good, but I also had some quibbles. I still recommend it.

This has been recommended to me multiple times over the years, so I was intrigued to give it a read. Unfortunately, it proved to be a total non-starter, and after 50 pages I called it quits. (The prospect of another ~430 pages was just too much for me.)
The writing is incredibly dense, as if you’re reading a thesis rather than a book. And while the short fairytales are an interesting start point for each segment, I struggled to make head or tail of what the central message was.
Additionally, although I do think there’s commonality in the way women are taught to make themselves small, I struggled with the idea of specifically ‘female’ energy. Ten years ago I’d just have rolled my eyes, but today it feels too much like bioessentialism for me to ignore.

I enjoyed the introspection that this book allows me to explore. The writer is very articulate in the spirit of mindfulness, curiosity and intuition. I felt that it sparked an inspiration in me to trust my inner desires and curiosities.

Some chapters resonated with me while others seemed to have gone over my head. Found a few parts of it to be quite heteronormative. But, this could be a good book to revisit or to lean on when going through moments of change and transition.
this book felt like all the women that came before are hugging me and telling me their ancient stories and giving me pagan healing remedies, basically my bible and life guide
