I thought Life of Pi was not all it was said to be. It was slow to start, and and continues slowly, and seemingly endlessly for most of the book. While the whole book had an undercurrent of surrealism, by far the most surreal part was <spoilers> the man-eating island near the end. </spoilers> That was very odd, like the entire book, and I didn’t feel it added to the story. Life of Pi was not all bad however, there was humor scattered throughout it, which did make it far more enjoyable. One final note, watch out for the gory parts that can be found periodically throughout the book.

I got about half way through. The book is well written (which is why I kept reading as long as I did) and I'm sure it's full of all kinds of great symbolism and allegory and stuff like that. But the imagery of captive animals killing each other is detailed and really disturbing. I couldn't keep going. No, that's not true. I could have kept going, but I didn't want to. The writing and the lessons weren't worth the awfulness for me.
