One of the best books about ghosts. As someone who does believe or at leasts wants to believe the possibility of ghosts I loved the way that Colin Dickey talks about how we the living make these places haunted more than any ghost could.

Dickey serves as an apt and able guide through an American landscape of the deceased. With pointed social commentary and well woven historical research, and illuminating storytelling this book  managed to excavate a very American fear and guilt of what we have done to make ghosts in/ and of this country.

A spectacular exploration of not just "haunted" places, but also the idea of what it means to be haunted and what we mean when we talk about ghosts. Aside from plenty of historical information, there are several points of sociopolitical commentary that made me think of the idea of haunted places a little differently.
A note - being that this book tackles some of the terrible eras of American history, please be prepared for a brief but graphic description of physical harm to those who were enslaved.
