The first person narrator tries to tell a stray puppy that they don’t need a dog – Oscar is all the dog they’ll ever need. But, Oscar isn’t here – and the puppy needs a home, and a name, and reassurance during the storm.
As the narrator comes to realise they may end up with a new puppy, the illustrations change to warmer hues.
A quiet and gentle story of memories and new beginnings, as the narrator tells the puppy all about Oscar.

When a little boy comes across a stray dog on the beach, he at first tries to ignore it since he's still grieving the loss of his one and only dog Oscar, whom he loved with all his heart. But gradually, as the pup follows him along the beach, the boy slowly builds an affection for the dog. When a storm comes, the boy takes the pup home and tells it all about Oscar, his one and only dog... until now.

A heartstring tugger for dog-lovers everywhere.

My very cruel sister told me to read this. For context, my last dog who passed away several years ago was named Oscar. To quote the book, "You know who was my pal? Oscar. My old pal, Oscar. My one and only dog." So now here I am, sobbing about a picture book.

As odd as it sounds this story reminded me of my cat Indy who recently passed. What a beautiful children's books. Wonderful illustrations. Sweet message.

This is a good book for when you're starting to think about getting another pet for family after the loss of one. I'm not sure it's a great one for the beginning of the grief process, but I think it's good for later parts.
