This is a fresh take on the cosy mystery café genre and it really worked.

The space setting and mining/Scooper-driving details added an interesting backdrop and an overall claustrophobic, dangerous feel behind the pleasant surface.

Well, mostly pleasant surface anyway. Within just a few days of opening their Oort Cloud Café Andi and Cy are already up to their eyeballs in overeager volunteers, mafia-esque henchmen, break-ins and bodily harm. Not to mention the inconvenient whereabouts of the previous owner!

The plot unfolds nicely and at a good pace, and whilst there are plenty of suspects and motives it remains easy to follow what’s going on. I instantly loved Andi and Cy (who wouldn’t), but also found the side-characters interesting and well fleshed-out. I’ve seen this described as ‘Agatha Raisin in space’ and agree for the most part, except that I never really took to Agatha the way I did to Andi here.

Richard’s light, witty tone lifts the story, and the elements of romance and thriller that he slips in alongside the main mystery plot mean that there is a little something for everyone. I would definitely recommend this book to cosy mystery fans looking for something new!

Saturn’s rings in all their glory filled the room with reflected light, the space opened out and the room became more than just a derelict and unloved bar. Even an ‘ucky’ one.
This was now my café, and I was going to make it work. I’d even thought of a name. And Cy was going to help me.
“Welcome to the Oort Cloud Café, Cy.”
He shook his head. “I just hope you know what you’re doing.”

This is about as different as it gets in terms of sci/fi murder mystery sleuthing. For a start it is set on Saturn in a cafй frequented by miners, with lots of gossip and dodgy goings on and a body hidden in a freezer. It is imaginative and I like imaginative! The author himself has described it as an ‘Agatha Raisin in space.’

Who killed the previous owner of the ‘Ucky Strike Cafe’ which has lost its L?

It seems that Andorra might be the one to find out. There is a light-hearted feel to this novel and plenty of moments that made me laugh right from the start:

Also there are some interesting, (exclamation, exclamation,) revelations LOL… that I didn’t see coming at all and who would have guessed the culprit? Not me…

Andorra comes across as a likeable character who is looking for love and (sometimes tries too hard to find it .) Can she find love now she has escaped the hurts of her past? The supporting characters are believable and the story is well-written and engaging.

Even though it is Sc-fi it is a cozy Sci-fi, so don’t let that put you off if that might.

Do check out Richard’s website. He has written an enviable collection of books and is a fantastic supporter of independent authors with his Indie Showcases.

My recommendation: Read it! 5 stars. Enjoyable read.

I'm not usually a cozy mystery fan because it always drives me crazy when people don't report crimes to the police and decide to investigate themselves.  I decided to give this one a try though because of the twist on the genre.  This cafe owner who is investigating a crime is living on a space station.

Andorra and her friend Cyril moved to a space station near Saturn.  It is there to support mining in the rings of Saturn.  The previous owner of the cafe left suddenly.  When cleaning the cafe to reopen though, they find his body.  Not knowing who to trust on the station because they are new, they keep him in the freezer.

The book gets into issues of sexual harassment and infidelity because the previous owner was known for seducing many women on the station and then keeping records that could be used to blackmail them.  Anyone could be a suspect.

I liked the world building.  Andorra is taken all over the station to see how life on the space station works.  It was well thought out and logical.

The book takes place an unspecified time in the future when Mars has been colonized for a long time.  Unfortunately, there still is homophobia on the space station.  That surprised me because usually I don't see that in sci-fi I read.  It made me uncomfortable because I kept thinking that we should be over that by then. This review was originally posted on Based On A True Story

I received this is exchange for an honest review.

What a fun read!

Firstly I want to say that even if you don’t like Sci-Fi, don’t let that put you off giving this a go. It very much has the feel of a contemporary novel, they just happen to live on a mining station in space rather than on a street on Earth.

In this novel, we follow a cast of relatable characters as they try and go about their lives after discovering a secret in the freezer of a run down cafe. This is exactly what you want from a cosy crime novel. There’s mystery and drama, without it getting too intense and bordering on thriller. There’s plenty of twists and turns to keep you reading to the end (and I bet you won’t guess the ending!)

I for one, can’t wait to see what they get up to next!
