This book is absolutely adorable. The artist's work is some of my favorites. It's a fun little sarcastic book.
I was tempted to put this under children's literature, but by the time you hit the end of the book, there was hardly anything childlike about the story or the fairies! Go figure.
Was interesting and amusing to read. It was also great to see subtle slice of aristo life during the time period (mostly a mention of the Arabian nights illustrations...that got me distracted looking for the book for at least an hour!)
But yes. These fairies are not exactly wholesome in any sense of the word. Silly little pranksters.

I bought this when it came out, ages ago. There's nothing to it, really. It's the book equivalent of a candy bar. Enjoy it for what it is and ask for nothing more, because it's just a silly little trifle.
As a Python fan, the recent passing of Terry Jones hit me very hard, and I was determined to read something of his for my 2020 Reading Challenge as a tribute. My first thought was a re-read of "Starship Titanic" (a 5-star book), but a look at his bibliography led me to this little gem.
This is the diary of Angelica Cottington, who grows up surrounded by fairies. Scolded by unbelieving relatives, she starts pressing the creatures in the pages of a book intended for flowers in order to have proof of their existence. But later, as she grows older, the fairy folk take their revenge.
The fairies themselves are drawn by the immensely talented Brian Froud - the conceptual designer for "Labyrinth" and "The Dark Crystal", amongst other great works. His exquisite and often risquè illustrations perfectly compliment the dark adult tones of Jones' prose: this isn't a fairy story for the kiddies!
Since this is primarily an art book, it is a tragically short read, but one I really enjoyed and will definitely revisit.
Rest in peace, Mr. Jones.

I love this book with all my dear heart! I've never felt such childhood nostalgia! It reminded me of the times I believed fairies danced at the bottom of the garden, the fairytales in the books I read before bedtime were true, that if I really wanted to fly to neverland - I could. If I found a hole in a tree it would lead me to wonderland. Possibility, magic and folklore, fairytale and imagination, belief, hope - so much hope, is embedded like the squashed fairies throughout the pages. And there is an undercurrent of darkness where I felt on edge the entire time. This book restored so much wonder in me! And left me with one question.... what if everything was true? What if with belief, a glimmer in the eye, and a head full of possibility, the secret door to an unlocked world - opens!
I really love this book. I love this book so much I've bought it 3 times. I don't mean a copy for myself and two friends, but bought it for myself 3 times. (The first was lost in a move, the third I bought just for a new squashed fairy decal to put in my car window). There isn't a lot of actual writing, but the fairies crack me up every-time I look at them.
A co-worker loaned me this. A cute "journal" of captured fairies in salacious poses and the "author"'s commentary. Very British :)

Let me start out by saying that this book is not for kids. It has a dark tone and adult theme.
I enjoyed this book. It was like I was reading someone's diary, lol. I love books like that. I also like how the "writing" in the book starts of child like and then it changes to more of an adult "writing" as Lady Cottongton grows older. By child like, I mean misspelled words and things like that.
I looove the look of this book! It looks worn out a bit and it feels lovely. I also enjoyed the illustrations done by Brian Froud. If you don't know who he is, he worked on some creatures for Jim Henson's Dark Crystal and Labyrinth. I love those movies, especially Labyrinth! Oh, Jareth, how I love you!!!
Ok, I'm getting way off topic here. Where was I. Oh, yeah, Brian Froud. I love his fairies and goblins creatures.
I wish this book was a bit longer but I seen there is a second book and I definitely want to check it out.
If you enjoy dark tales with fairies in them, then you might want to check this out. It's definitely a fast read seeing how short this book is.
