This was the perfect book to get me out of a reading slump. I absolutely loved the plot and the characters. It had just the right amount of character growth and description scenes. It’s obvious that immense love, care, and brains, were put into the creation of it. It’s really beautifully written. I found myself feeling all of the emotions along with the characters. Sad, happy, angry, confused.. I definitely would recommend this book to anyone! If you’re looking for something to immerse you in the story, and constantly having you wonder what comes next, this book is for you. I admire Ernest Cline so much for the creation of this novel. It is so well pieced together. Often while reading I found myself thinking about how amazing the writing was. I honestly just don’t have words. The only criticisms I have are that at certain points, i felt pulled out of the story and disconnected. I didn’t find myself turning the pages desperately wanting to know what happened next. Most of the time I was. But there were certain times where something just felt off. The other criticism is that I just wish that there was MORE. The ending was great and I feel it tied everything together nicely, but I want more. I want to find out what happens AFTER. Other than those 2 things, it would be a perfect 5 star read.

Starts with a great premise: an epic challenge inspired by the real life challenge of the Swordquest video game series. Went downhill quickly. Unfortunately tedious, misogynistic, and transphobic at times. The characters are flat and Wade is awful. He literally calls himself a "nice guy" in the last scene of the book, and he is every bit the stereotypical "nice guy".
