I read this primarily during a snowstorm and it was so aesthetic. I read this authors book ‘Autumn’ in October or November last year, so I wanted to read the rest of the series in the appropriate seasons. I remember one of my criticisms of ‘Autumn’ was that I wish there were more descriptions of autumn scenery, and luckily my wishes were fulfilled in this one. There were plenty of mentions of snow falling and the gloominess of winter coupled with the hope one feels come christmastime, and it was overall pleasant to read. There were some truly beautiful passages that I wanted to bookmark.
I don’t read these books for the plot or characters or anything, I just kind of read them to connect with my surroundings and appreciate nature and seasons through literature. So I can’t really comment on plot of this book or the characters. Again, like ‘autumn’, this installment was very reflective. Lots of reflection on the past, and kind of commenting how the winter seasons tend to unearth memories we long ago buried. The book takes place in Christmas Day as the Main character, elderly Sophia, hosts Christmas with her son Art and his fake girlfriend, Lux. Sophia’s sister who’s she’s had qualms with shows up and they argue and reflect and sing and argue some more. Art feels more connected to the stranger he hired to play his girlfriend than he does his own family. There’s some odd magical realism elements as well, which I didn’t really understand, but oh well. I’m not too critical of these books in regards to stuff like that.
Anyway, a lovely little book that tells me that this is the season of lost memories and reconnecting with loved ones.

Week three: a book that fits a prompt that didn’t make the final list. The prompt I chose was “a book whose cover reminds you of one of the four seasons”.

I think I'm in the minority when I say I enjoyed Winter even more than Autumn. The story is more straightforwardly organized, and the forays into artists (Hepworth in this case) are a little more restrained and organic. The interplay of politics, art, time, and the literary (A Christmas Carol, Shakespeare) etc were, again, noteworthy. Ali Smith has a way of exploring and exposing human vulnerability that sneaks up on me in the best way.

Intrigued. Up and down. Lovely writing style but also a little confusing at times as to where this is all heading.
This is a very different kind of sequel in that none of the original characters are present, but the same setting and timeframe prevails. I'll be interested to see where the sequence goes next.

Старая сказка новым языком.
Книга завораживает, обволакивает, втягивает в свою реальность. Нам просто понять книгу, согласиться с миром, потому что есть красивая героиня Люкс, которая комментирует происходящее, дает оценку тому, что видит, и ты понимаешь, что не сошел с ума, что все в порядке, мир стабилен.
Маленький кусочек из жизни людей, который привел к объединению, понимаю, к тому, что назревало и никак не могло оформиться. Такие моменты я люблю. Люблю, когда есть кто-то кто не направляет людей, а указывает на абсурдность того, что они делают. Наверное, каждому нравится наблюдатель, так и тут, на жизнь одной маленький семьи посмотрела девочка иностранка, она их послушала, она высказалась и исчезла так же, как и пришла, неожиданно. И очень даже понятно почему герой хочет ее иметь в своей жизни, она как стабильное данное, как что-то не облепленное абсурдом. Нечто подобное истине, та что наблюдает, и ты стремишься соответствовать взгляду. Жаль, что нам нужно что-то внешнее, чтобы делать так, как мы хотим. Почему-то не хватает нам собственного внимания на себя, на свои поступки.
Зима здесь лишь как признак объединения, как то, что дает шанс. То время года, от которого мы ждем чудес, и автор не отходит от стереотипа зимы, рождества, она описывает рождественскую мечту. Только это не привычное описание и непривычный добрый дух, но все поступки ведут к привычному стереотипу, к тому, что мы ждем от рождественских историй. И девочка Люкс - это опять же непривычный рождественский добрый дух. Пусть довольно прозаично она ссылает на прекрасное (роза) и на устойчивое, неизменяемое во времени (Шекспир), мы получаем от нее празднично важное - мир в семье.
Вся книга – это стереотип рождественской истории. Но рассказана история по новому, с новыми разговорами на старые темы, другие слова, другие отсылки, возможность новому поколению что-то понять, что-то исправить, потому что Скрудж и его время устарели и становятся более непонятны.
Как возможность еще раз взглянуть на свою жизнь, как еще раз прикоснуться к такому ожидаемому чуду, книжка подойдет и порадует)

Waar Autumn toch niet helemaal mijn ding bleek te zijn, was Winter met zijn zeer vervreemdende [*] begin over een zwevend hoofd (of is het toch wat anders?), fijne steken naar de Brexit, Boris Johnson en Trump een aangenaam tijdsverdrijf. Veel minder het gevoel dat ik voor dit boek te dom/weinig onderlegd was, met slechts zijdelinge referenties naar kunst...
Na het lezen van een recensie (na afloop) ergens op een Engelse website wel het gevoel dat ik toch nog een en ander aan woordspelingen gemist heb - slecht een paar denk ik herkend te hebben, maar er zitten er nog veel meer in (maar ik ben dan ook niet Kroatisch-via-Canadees)...

This one was bleak and not as enjoyable as Smith's 'Autumn', but I enjoyed it nonetheless for what it set out to do and of course as a continuum to the Seasonal series she is working on. Aesthetically this one was not my taste, but it was fitting for the novel's purpose.
