It had a much choppier rhythm than Harlem Shuffle, especially starting out. It's decision to shift between characters and thread together tangential elements from the previous books plot line meant that it took time to round into form. It frequently felt start-stop. Once it settled in, it felt like a worthy expansion of Ray Carney's Harlem that began in the first volume.

3.5 ⭐️ rounded up, mainly because it’s not quite as snappy as the original. Still, three connected stories about crime and the underworld in NYC in the 70’s are delightful entertainment. Whitehead brings both the city and his characters to life in a way that is relatable and surprisingly heartwarming.
