some moments were just so unbearable especially the last 75 percent of the book but still enjoyed it a lot and lmao the book did falter my sokeefe heart for a bit (to an extreme tbh) but now im more than certain they're gonna be endgame and sofitz is just roadblock along the way, just life happening and only a matter of time until the sokeefe finish line :D

I am speechless. This story deep dives into the characters and emotions and developed so many plot and character driven events.

still pretty slow, but not as bad as my first read i guess? definitely still a low point in the series though

series review here!

[FIRST READ - Dec. 3, 2021 - Dec. 5, 2021 - 2 stars - original review below]

i actually feel so bad giving this one such a low rating but... i just couldn't get into it. this was by far the slowest and worst of the series (in my personal opinion!! i respect anyone who likes the book, obviously!) and i just could not fully get into it.

i have very few things i liked about this one. there were maybe two really action packed parts in the book, but from there, it was a pain to get through the middle of this book (a good 500 pages of absolute bore.)

there was a decent action packed bit toward the beginning, which made me hopeful for the rest of the book, but since it was focusing on recovery, there really wasn't much happening for a solid chunk of the book. we then get another action packed scene before we go to another scene that doesn't really feel like it belongs after what just happened, and we get a cliffhanger that falls flat. and i feel HORRIBLE about saying that, because i'd read a lot of reviews saying this was one of the best or it was really good and i just... couldn't get into it.

the characters feel flat. you could see the obvious turn from focusing on the neverseen and the plot to focusing on sophie's love life, and while i understand that we are reading the pov of a teenage girl, and that includes her crushes and feelings, it felt so detatched after what happened toward the last maybe 40 pages of the book to end it with something that didn't really fit with anything that had just happened. this was 800 some pages long... and it didn't need to be, at all. i am all for a long book, when half of that book isn't stuff you could easily summarize into maybe 200 pages. the sophie and fitz bonding time was definitely needed, and i hope that it is foreshadowing their abilities as cognates being used more in the next book, but most of it just felt like fluff and filler that didn't need to be there.

this one fell really flat for me. it was a disappointment, but i'm trying to go into book 8 with higher hopes. hoping for more action and less sitting in bed or around a table planning (and hoping shannon will break her... what is this now? 4? book streak of having the god slowest beginning leading into a faster paced ending. BEGGING.)

1.5 rounded up.

The start and ending are good. But the several hundred pages of character development in the hospital is unexpected in an adventure series. I enjoyed it, but it was a departure from the tightly woven intensity I was expecting.
