Stilted dialogue and a double timeline that served no meaningful purpose ultimately made "The Paris Library" a slog for me. There's great research here, and perhaps there could have been an interesting WWII novel if the author had chopped out the unnecessary 1980s plot. But the dry recitation of factoids posing as conversation really hampered my enjoyment of even the best bits. I'm puzzled by the warm reception this book has received.

Told in dual timelines—1939 Paris and 1983 Montana—The Paris Library is a World War II historical fiction with a touch of romance, coming-of-age moments, and above all, a deep reverence for books. That premise alone had me hooked.
In 1939, young Odile works at the American Library in Paris, where she and her fellow librarians display quiet, fierce bravery during the Nazi occupation. In 1983, teenage Lily is curious about her mysterious, reserved neighbor—an older Odile—and their unexpected friendship slowly uncovers Odile’s haunting and heroic past.
Both timelines were compelling in their own right, but I especially loved watching Lily and Odile’s bond grow. There’s something so moving about learning someone’s story piece by piece, especially when it’s this rich and layered.
Books are powerful weapons, and I loved the librarians’ determination to keep them in the hands of those who needed them most. Based on a true story, this novel was full of complex characters and emotional depth—I’ll be thinking about it for a long time.
📚 My home library is still under construction, but it felt like the perfect place to take a photo for this one. It just fits the vibe.
