I always enjoy Ronson's writing. I don't always agree with his reading of people and the circumstances he seems to put himself in, but if anything that makes his work even more enjoyable. This book was thought provoking whilst simultaneously managing to be light hearted and humorous.

A fascinating exploration into extremist beliefs and conspiracy theorists. Really quite funny if it wasn't for the fact that many of the conspiracy theories and extremist beliefs are still rampant, if not more widely believed today. There's a section with a KKK leader who believes the best thing for the klan to do is to appear more PR friendly. No more saying horrible slurs. It's only when he is confronted by protestors and criticism that he resorts to his true self and says an absolutely insane phrase. These people can't help themselves!
It's really interesting to see how people reacted to radical islamists pre 9/11, what Alex Jones was doing pre Sandy Hook, and how these fringe personalities fought to get themselves heard pre social media. Jon's writing can be very engrossing. Much like how Jon saw himself slowly sliding into believing these conspiracies, I, for a moment, became thoroughly convinced that this while New World Order thing is real. Why else would a group have a journalist tailed and intimidated?!
And though there are some moments in the book that justly highlights the FBI's abuse of power, their incompetence, and their coverups. The end is like a splash of cold water in the face to pull you back into rationalist thought.
