I do not believe in judging books by modern standards, its unfair and sometimes silly. So if this book had been written pre-Women's Movement, I would have given it more slack, but 1980 is a little late for some of the crap spewed here. I bought a stack of Sidney Sheldon books at a library sale thinking they would be fun-bad, and mostly, they've just been bad-bad. This did start out to be reasonably entertaining despite the cringe. But it deteriorated into ludicrousness about the time that Our Heroine starts sleeping with a Mafia guy who she knows is "an amoral killer" but darn, you know, he's just so irresistibly hot and a woman can't "feel like a woman" without "approval" from some hot guy even if he is a sociopathic murderer, well, I could work up a rant here, but I won't bother.

This book was so sad and the ending hurt me. I remember reading this in college and being so sad for Jennifer.

So I apparently picked this up as a Kindle freebie in May 2010 -- since it was first published in 1980, I'm guessing it was maybe a 30-year anniversary celebration freebie or something. Not being very familiar with novels written shortly before I was born, I had no idea how old the book was.

On the whole, it's aged very well. It reads a lot like a combination of John Grisham's best legal thrillers with some Mario Puzo's Godfather thrown in. The storyline had several major twists, basically all of which succeeded in surprising me.

I even enjoyed the parts of the book that were a little dated -- references to national heroes whose names I didn't recognize piqued my curiosity, and a scene where the main character is trying to complete the "nearly impossible" task of winning a paternity suit made me chuckle. But the dated parts were fewer than you might think... the main character even turns to Lexis and Westlaw for her legal research, just like I do!

I used to love Mr. Sheldon's books, but I admit this one didn't do it for me. Then again, it is hard to beat the thriller emotions that Master of the Game can coax out of you.

The wikipedia article does a good job giving you the plot. I just found Jennifer Parker to be like Mr. Sheldon's usual characters, beautiful and ambitious and so overly lustful. Mr. Sheldon's novels usually read like a It's a Wonderful Life minus the happy endings. After awhile you just want to reach the end and end the girl's suffering.

Joshua, age 2?, getting nailed to the cross was definitely an eye opener, I wasn't expecting Mr. Sheldon to follow through with that. His death, however, was just so frustrating because if I have to read another women die unhappy and alone in his books, I'm going to give up.

ALSO IF YOU COULD JUST STAY IN YOUR PANTS WOMAN.

But then again, I think I really laughed so hard in another one of Mr. Sheldon's books when the beautiful nun ditches the man in love with her because she must go back to God. That was really ironic and delicious. Unfortunately, none of that hilarious writing is found here. I say for his excellent writing and character descriptions, a solid 3/5.

now this is a trashy book.

I have read every book Sidney Sheldon has ever written, and this is one of my favourites. This is an intriguing, fast-paced, easy to read story that will keep you wondering what will happen next. If you’re looking for a book to enjoy while basking in the sun on the beach, while taking a bubble bath or when traveling on a lengthy plane, train or bus ride, consider this one. It’s not a masterpiece, but it is highly entertaining. You’ll laugh and cry, and love and hate the characters.

[4.25 stars] I thought I'd finish the book with peace in my heart. Well, now I'm fully awake at 2 o'clock in the morning questioning everything while my stomach rumbles louder than my thoughts. Great read!

This is Sidney Sheldon we're talking about. His books need no reviews! <3

If you know me then you know that most of the books I “read“ are actually audiobooks I won’t go into the long reason as to why just know that I listen to my books more than actually read them. Usually this works out OK but in the instance of this very dated Sidney Sheldon fluffy Mafia thriller it’s not a good thing. I believe this may have been recorded prior to any new technology so that may have been part of the problem but also when you have one woman doing all of the voices including many male characters and one very young annoying male child- Well it either works out fantastic or it doesn’t. In this case it was the latter. For a grown woman to be voicing that of a young male around the age of six or seven...it just didn’t work.

Let’s say we get past the narrative issues. Unfortunately this Sidney Sheldon book just has not aged well. Parts of it are just so dated I actually caught myself rolling my eyes. It’s just downright silly.

I think I may have lost some brain cells while listening to this book.
