I enjoyed this book a lot, though not as much as Circe.
There were a couple sections that dragged and I was thinking about giving it 3.75 stars BUT THE WAY MILLER DID THE ENDING BUMPED UP MY RATING!! I absolutely loved how she did the final section of the book and I did not expect it.
Like I knew the story of Achilles and Patroclus so I was curious to see how she was going to deal with that and the fact that
we get Patroclus’ pov after he’s died is very cool and I really enjoyed that aspect

“I thought, This is what Achilles will feel like when he is old. And then I remembered: he will never be old.”

I have never read a love story convey so much closeness. Even the physical gap between their bodies must have been too much distance for them to bear.

The prose reads like poetry. The story was incredibly satisfying and kept my interest. I got teary-eyed a few times. This is a story where two characters dare to love in a world where marrying for love is an outlier.
Odysseus was the only other person who was truly in love in this book?
I am at a loss for words for how beautiful this story was. It has renewed my interest in Greek Mythos, which is a tough task.

“Patroclus, I have given enough to them. I will not give them this.”

This book surprised me not in how much I enjoyed it, but in what ways that I did. Throughout the day I found myself falling in love with the character of Patroclus. I found him so addicting and following Achilles through his eyes was so intriguing. The ending was predictable but not the details which had me sobbing.
When we are hearing Patroclus narrate Achilles actions after his death and then finally Patroclus yearning for his final resting with him, that part broke me dude.

Overall this book was so sad and yet so beautiful.❤️

I think this story as a whole is a beautiful and crushing one and I understand why so many people love this book so intensely but I just didn’t love it the way I’ve seen others love it. A lot of the times, the way this book was written would throw me off, make me feel disconnected from the story and characters, and made it harder for me to enjoy. I pushed through because I wanted to know what all the hype (and tears) were for lol.

This book definitely had me feeling sick with emotion at times, especially towards the ending, but the writing style unfortunately wasn’t for me.

Also, I need to note how emotionally attached I became to Briseis. I love her like nobody else. She deserved so much better. Briseis I will avenge you.

If you cry easily, bring a box of tissues with this book. Madeline Miller does not hold back with her poetic writing and gut-wrenching imagery. There are times when you want to cringe,
especially during bloody fights, medical scenes, the plague, and almost anything related to a woman character.
But when judging the book as a romance, there is no doubt that Miller did a good job portraying the highs and lows of Achilles and Patroclus' relationship. Amazing story, through and through.

Extremly good book. Even while knowing the myth, i could still get immersed within the story and feel it in my heart. I had alot of emotions and avsolutely loved the book. It is a classic greek myth involving
gods, hubris, known figures, tragedy and prophesies
while still feeling modern and fresh. I liked that you can start reading without knowing the myths or characters and still enjoy it because of the amazing and natural explainations

Okay. The ending of this book was incredibly touching, and i loved how the character dynamics changed throughout and you really felt like the characters were growing up, however, it took me AGES to get through all of this thing. It was iNCREDIBLY slow paced for the first like two thirds and then in the last portion of the book it suddenly went crazy fast and ten years passed in the space of a few chapters??? despite this, there is practically no plot during most of this book. I LOVED I THOUGH. the imagery throughout the book is incredible. I loved the relationship between Patroclus and Briseis and actually felt like (SPOILERS!!!) she just randomly died way too abruptly and she deserved way more.
