Another book I'd like to give 3.5 stars. The language is minimalist and steely, and yet evocative, but Ellis has done the subject matter better in earlier novels. I felt Lunar Park was a welcome departure, and while Imperial Bedrooms is plot driven (unlike Less Than Zero), it still feels like a bit of a rehash. I keep thinking BEE must be annoyed with the torture pr0n trend in movies, because it makes his sadistic scenes less shocking.

My second attempt at an Ellis book and it will be my final. I read Less Than Zero (LTZ) and was kinda meh about it, and I’m even more meh about this one. Just so blah the whole way through and the whole “it’s full of disaffected characters” thing just made me not care about their exploits either. This might have been shocking in LTZ, but by now it seemed pretty typical. There was just no spark in this one, whereas at least in LTZ every few pages or so he’d have some kind of clever sentence or two to keep me engaged. About the only positive I can give is the pacing is done well and it is a quick read.

Suomeksi Kalliit yöt. Taattua BretEastonEllisiä, eli sekavaa, kammottavuuksillä mässäilevää tekstiä. Tosin kammoisuuksia oli aika vähän tässä kirjassa. En ole varma mitä kirjassa haluttiin sanoa, vai haluttiinko mitään...Taisi olla viimeinen Ellis mitä luen ikinä - kiitos.

I read this in two sittings (unusual for me). I enjoyed it but Bret Easton Ellis has a twisted relationship with women and the violence he describes against them is enough for this to be my last of his novels.

2.5*, rounded up due to audiobook narration of Andrew McCarthy was a perfect match. The Batemanesque moments in Palm Springs (last quarter of the novel) - bizarre addition.
