Excellent historical novel about a Revolutionary War battle I'd never heard of until now. I've really not liked the last few Ballads novels, in fact I couldn't even be bothered to finish Tom Dooley, but I'm happy to say that this entirely restores my faith in the series and the author!

Very disappointed in this book. Sharyn McCrumb is one of my favorite authors so I was expecting to enjoy this book very much, instead I just found it really boring.

I am a huge fan of McCrumb's Ballad Series. This entry was more plodding than most of her books, but I did enjoy the insight into the Revolutionary War and the Appalachian participation.

Extremely well-written...because, well, I don't think she can write a bad book. I enjoyed it less than the other Ballad novels though. It was much more event driven than the Ballad novels usually are, and I missed the deep character development she does so well.

An interesting fictionalized account of a lesser known Revolutionary War battle. I now live near this area of the Tennessee/North Carolina/South Carolina and I can tell you that many of the descendants of these patriots still live here in the area. The story takes on a whole different meaning when your ancestors fought for American independence in your "backyard." I see that some people didn't enjoy this particular book as much as some of Sharyn McCrumb's other novels, but I think she gets the right tone for the characters and their motivations.

If you like historical fiction you will enjoy this book. Rich details of the setting. Interesting to learn about a little known battle that appears to have had great significance.
