there is one thing i would never get tired of and it's octavia butler randomly naming a hundred vegetables in a random pharagraph. it doesn't matter how many times has it happened it's DELIGHTFUL.
it's unfortunately impossible to rate this book by stars because based on what? it was perfectly well written, it is engaging, unique wonderful and horrendous, and there is just the right amount of otherness in the main character to be eyecatching. whenever butler tells a story it flows endlessly and seamlessy and i have no need for it to end, ever. i just hope it keeps going and it will not stop.
that is to say i love how lauren is really just 18 in the head, although yes black children - especially black girls - aren't allowed a happy childhood and have to grow up as fast as possible compared to their white counterparts, but she is so youthful and determined! our future cult leader is very darling! although i don't like her as much, but i have an insane obsession with lilith, it's not a problem to lose to the best. ALTHOUGH this is especially why lauren is an incredibly compelling character: she has so many layers, each more interesting than the other, and althogether she isn't much likeable, but such intelligent and practical person which makes her a true visionary. i can't wait to see what she does in pott, albeit i am terrified she's going to have a child with her brainless and old as balls boyfriend. it was remarkably uncomfortable to read about them, it was so well done!
moreover, these characters keep gagging each other every page it's hysterical. against xenogenesis, earthseed has one important advantage: we pay attention to so many more people at once, which i adore ♥
anyways. cleric mains rejoice over this book.

Reading this in 2025 as a black American woman is a real doozy. I didn’t want to finish it. It’s scary how close Butler comes to predicting the future.
