This was really good and i came this close (👌) to crying, a look into family loyalty, history and relationships,
Sometimes felt like benny and byrons (if thats not how u spell them im sorry i listen to the audiobook) characters could at times have been a bit more developed but that was mainly cause i really liked to development of the others

Ugh I really wanted to like and finish this but the story was all over the place. I didn't know who's was who, or what's going on. Are we in present or in the past.

The story just moved too slow for me. I read 40% before dnf'g. I struggled to get through the part I did read. It was boring and confusing. I'm not one to "push through" and waste my time on a book I choose to voluntarily read if I don't like it. I typically only give books about 25% before moving on so I was very generous with this one.

I think the story was probably heading in a good direction, but just took too long to get there. I also didn't care for the writing style. It was too many characters that didn't add to the story and not enough important information to move the story forward. I listened to this on Audible and didn't care for the narrator either. Overall an interesting storyline but poor execution in my opinion. I would give it a 3.25 stars.

This is an incredible book. Although the topics of  intergenerational trauma and family secrets coming to light after the death of a relative may seem cliché on the surface, I thought that Black Cake's approach to them was unique and captivating. The characters were all interesting people, despite not always being likeable, and their stories pulled me along to see how they would unfold. I enjoyed the multiple perspectives and timelines - these can be difficult to write well, but Wilkerson does a great job. I can't wait to read more of her work, and I absolutely recommend this book.

This is so beautifully written. I ended up just thinking about this book for weeks after I'd finished. I loved the multiple pov. The characters are not perfect, they are not always likable, but they feel very real that way, and most redeem themselves in the end. This is a story of how important it is to share our truth with the people we love without assuming their response, but also how important it is to hear them in return.

The narrator's voices for the audio were lovely.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I was fully engrossed in the characters lives and wanted more story. While heartbreaking at some points, and more than hopeful at others, this story was a rollercoaster of emotions. While fictional, it felt as if these characters were real, and I’m sure their experiences while fictional, were close to those of real people’, and the story felt so real.

This is a fantastic historical fiction exploring the importance of heritage and our cultural roots, as well as celebrating our collective humanity. Black Cake details multiple generations of a family of individuals who have all face steep adversity and have had to develop strong senses of self. I felt as though the characters were well-developed, extremely vibrant, and most importantly, believable. I really enjoyed the expansive timelines and locations in this book, it takes you across time and across the Atlantic. I am very excited to watch the Hulu adaptation to see how it compares.

So much goodness in here. Lots of strands of stories odien disjointed but ultimately all woven back together. Could’ve used a better editor, but overall, an important story to tell.
