This was really good and i came this close (👌) to crying, a look into family loyalty, history and relationships,
Sometimes felt like benny and byrons (if thats not how u spell them im sorry i listen to the audiobook) characters could at times have been a bit more developed but that was mainly cause i really liked to development of the others

This is a book about secrets and forgiveness.

I have first encountered this story as an eight part Disney+ series. Now that I finally got round to reading the book it's based on I can see why some people have problems with the narrative. It feels a lot more disjointed than the series, with a constant back and forth and introduction of seemingly random characters who turn out to be someone we didn't expect. You'll just have to accept that there's a big cast, and we're following them all.

The book deals with a lot of difficult topics (my content warnings are probably longer than my review!) and it sometimes feels like it's too many, even though some, like the rape, are barely mentioned. The TV show fleshes the time in Edinburgh out a lot more.

The writing is beautiful but I would really recommend the Disney+ series - it makes the book a lot easier to read.

A story of generational trauma with love at the center. It’s delicious and painful and almost like peeking into vignetted moments in these characters lives.

This is an incredible book. Although the topics of  intergenerational trauma and family secrets coming to light after the death of a relative may seem cliché on the surface, I thought that Black Cake's approach to them was unique and captivating. The characters were all interesting people, despite not always being likeable, and their stories pulled me along to see how they would unfold. I enjoyed the multiple perspectives and timelines - these can be difficult to write well, but Wilkerson does a great job. I can't wait to read more of her work, and I absolutely recommend this book.

The book was very calming even though it depicted terrible things at times. I liked how the book offers a glimpse into life in the Caribbean and of Caribbeans emigrating to the UK in the 1970s and 80s.
A family of people who all have secrets discover through flashbacks what had happened in their mothers life.
The end of the book felt a little rushed. Every character got their ending quite quickly. I would have preferred a more open ending
