This felt like a debut novel, but a solid one. As is the case with every mystery, much of the enjoyment results from whether the author sticks the landing, and I'd say he did.
Wyndham feels fairly stock-standard: he's a police detective with a tragic past, a weakness for pretty women and a drug addiction, but his heart's in the right place. Fine, but nothing special. Surrender-not has potential to be a great character, but it wasn't achieved in this novel.
Despite that whinging, I found the plot to be interesting, coherent, and it gave me a better perspective on Late-Era British Raj. It was a pleasant read. Solid enough both to recommend and to interest me in a sequel, but likely not to re-read, unless the rest of the series blows me away.
3/5.

A really good story. I enjoy historical fiction, though I have never read anything about the British in India. This book was a good start. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
An evocative portrayal of Calcutta in 1919. Racial tensions surround every encounter as Captain Sam Wyndham settles into life in his new city, while attempting to navigate the bureaucracy of the Raj in his new role in the police force. I guessed the murderer early on, but I’m suspicious like that. I didn’t guess the motive, or who else was involved, so this was still an exciting read that kept me gripped till the end.

A book set in the days of the British Raj. This mystery deals not only with murder but details the historical situation in the Bengal Presidency from a very personal point of view of the protagonists in the book. The British investigator Sam Wyndham is new in India and he is ably assisted by his able native assistant Surrender-Not Banerjee. This is a character driven book and we get a very good feel of the historical setting through their eyes, which to me makes the best of the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the British Raj.
