I’m a sucker for a character-driven novel full of Complicated emotions and unravelling them. The story being told through alternating time periods fits excellently and I loved the cast of characters working through their emotions and growing.
And god, I saw that ending coming but I was not ready for the tears. This was so beautifully done.

I do enjoy these books that put the protagonist into a summer camp/survival situation, a sort of upward/outward bound of staggering proportions. This is the second one I've read this year, but very different from Wild Bird (Van Draanen). It's told by slipping back and forth between the three-week tough hiking/survival experience and Ingrid's life, which is entirely dependent upon and wrapped up by and with her mother. A few interesting twists and turns, though not especially unexpected, add to the story, which is set in the forests of northern Ontario, Canada. And I really did read this in one long sitting!
Det var så himla länge sedan jag läste ut en bok på en dag. Kul att jag fortfarande kan det. Kanske behövdes bara en jäkligt bra bok som denna

Watching a character develop and grow from an experience set over a short period of time can sometimes feel rushed but [author:Danielle Younge-Ullman|1164592] handles it beautifully in this novel. While there are flashbacks involved which help to soften the short timeline, the three "current" weeks provide a landscape for Ingrid to tackle some pretty major demons.
I enjoyed the fact that while there was definite growth and forward movement, there was no attempt to pretend that 3 weeks in the woods would solve all of Ingrid's problems. It feels like a starting point, a chance for her to unpack her emotional baggage, without actually having finished dealing with it by the end of the book.
I really enjoyed Ingrid's character and in a different author's hands I may not of. She could have been bratty/entitled because of the way that she grew up, but she was sympathetic and understandable in her moodiness.
Overall, a great read with the added plus of being set in territory I know well, so I was able to easily picture the characters on their journey.
