3.5 stars. This was better than I expected, entertaining even, but just okay for me.
It took me until the last half of this novel to truly like it. It was a lot of information/emotions/backstory packed into 361 pages and I felt that there could have been more dimension/backstory to the other kids at the camp, but the author primarily focused on the protagonist, Ingrid. Which is not a bad thing. You get a very personal connection with Ingrid as a reader, and it's powerful.
Incredibly sad and unexpectedly deep. But there is a lot of resilience and perseverance in this novel as well. It's characters are damaged and flawed, but all seem to rise to the challenge of figuring shit out.
And how awesome it was to see a strong father figure for a change! Especially one who was not biological, but chose to be a parent.

This book was amazing!!! And so not the book to finish on a train as people look at your funny when you're crying in public places. This story was so honest, funny, emotional and so so well developed. Wow! 4.5/5 stars!!!

That twist tho...
My only complaint would be that I wished there had been a little bit more about the other kids at camp?? Like they all seemed like interesting characters that I could have gotten really invested in, but there was like two sentences about each of them.. idk... otherwise: A+

Work in a high school library and my goal for this year was to find some YA that I could soldier through and maybe even enjoy. This is one of them.
As an aside, I try to read YA through the eyes/mind of a teen/ya, but with a somewhat critical eye towards the quality of the writing. Either YA did not exist when I was growing up, or I skipped right over it to adult writing, so much of it seems rather lame. Does nothing to challenge the reader (and I mean challenge on a YA level, develop vocabulary, etc. And, please, don't say that books can just be entertaining because God knows I read enough Victoria Holt in the sixth grade that I could have ghostwritten books for her by high school. I'm working on it.

The narration of this books flips from Ingrid's past, we learn about her charmed childhood travelling around the work with her opera singing mother, to the present 3-week wildlife trip. Growing up, Ingrid had to take care of her mother when she was depressed. She also got to experience things that most of us could only dream of.
This novel is slow-paced. It also has a bit of a surprise ending that I should have guessed. Make sure you have a box of Kleenex next to you. I had a lot of compassion and admiration for Ingrid. What this character had to shoulder would be enormous for an adult, let along a teenager.
