This was a fun novella. I read Mr. Penumbra’s so long ago, but I could still enjoy this story. Listened to the story on the way to see family at a winery while Joy watched Paw Patrol with her headphones. Made for an enjoyable drive. Fast read/listen about uncovering a book from unexpected places.

I think my favorite part was how he describes being matched with his roommate using a fancy new algorithm. They didn’t get it at first, but they both “prioritized books” in packing. And then his roommate went on to be a computer programmer and found the algorithm. And guess what- it was completely random. I’m not sure how Macalester matched me with my roommate, but continues to be a match I am deeply grateful for.

It was a nice lil preamble to its sister book. I would love a book just on the stories of Penumbra’s colleagues of his original occult books job.

I only wish it was longer! I loved joining Mr. Penumbra's origin adventure

Source: Libby audio.

If you have not yet read Penubra’s 24 hour bookstore… go read that right now. SUPER entertaining. This came out as a “backstory” to that book.

A short, super fun story. (the audio book is 2 hours long)

the 5/5 rating is really because you really want to read the 24 hour bookstore book... but, this was entertaining and quick. The narrator is good.

Fans of the 24-hour bookstore will enjoy this prequel story; a super quick read with some fun historical stuff.

The writing was different than Mr. Penumbra’s 24-Hour Bookstore and the writing was my favorite part of the first book. I appreciate learning more about Penumbra’s start but didn’t feel it was super necessary.
