Okay. Yep. Hell yeah. Even more excited to see where Hickman's X-Men titles go now. This was incredible. Glad I could just jump in and read it all and not have to wait years and years for those final two issues.

With the backstory and lore already established in the first volume, this second volume can get down to the business of actual storytelling. Unfortunately, the story left to tell isn’t much of one. It’s all climax with no buildup and no follow up. What’s at stake in this conflict? Why should I care? Neither of these central questions is answered.

Again, Weaver’s art is incredible, as are his page layouts, but Hickman is writing in the equivalent of shorthand. Like the prior volume, this second arc reads like a vague sketch of a more fleshed-out plot. And, seriously, in this epic tale of historical forces clashing across multiple timelines throughout all of written history there are only *two* female characters—both only significant to the plot as the *mothers* of important male characters. It’s yet another sign that this is a paper-thin story dressed up in gorgeous visuals in order to make it appear more substantial than it actually is.

Ordinarily I am a total sucker for Hickman’s wild conspiracy plots overloaded with lore, but this does nothing for me.
