southern gothic stories brought to you by coca cola.

Personally I thought flannery’s style to be grating and it was a chore to finish this collection.

3.5

A fairly engaging story about a family road trip that’s violently cut short.
‘A Good Man is Hard to Find’ treats its readers to brief but vivid snapshots of 1950s Georgia before driving them to witness the death of all-American ideals in a world of evils.

Some absolutely incredible stories ("The Artificial Nigger", "The Displaced Person") and some middling. I'm very interested in O'Connor's project and I really admire both the craft and the ethos even if not every story worked for me. This is obviously a cohesive collection and one that deserves its place in American letters.

Some of these stories were so good and I loved seeing the situations the characters got into and how they tried to get out. Some of the other stories didn't  have too much substance.

I had a hard time getting through some of the stories or following what was going on, but eventually I got back on track. I will be able to recommend some of the stories in here, but the book as a whole will not be for everyone.

Excellent writing (O'Conner is a classic!) but I couldn't seem to enjoy this one- I found myself quite distracted by the outdated/problematic characters, themes, etc... I think if you read it with an academic/historical lens, it can be a wonderful read. Perhaps I'll try again another time.
