I thought I had already read this, but I had only read the shorter PDF version.

Wow. Beaton is a gifted storyteller and her precise way of dipping in and out of narrative moments gives just enough insight into poignant and unsettling moments at the oil camps. She is somehow able to build complex characters through only a handful of frames, and to navigate incredibly heavy topics (environmental destruction! Generational unemployment! The destitution of poverty in rural Canada!) in a way that does not overwhelm the narrative. I am in awe of this powerful memoir.

Migration of people from East Coast to other provinces, is not a new thing  and Kate Beaton shows in her graphic memeoir that is not a simple answer. She writes and shows something most people with debt can relate to being able to pay off debt they will tolerate things that they would not normally do, but everyone has their breaking point.  She shows how circumstances and situations can change people both for the goos and bad.

This is my second reading of Ducks. I'm a long time fan of Beaton and the comics about her life were always interesting. It's fascinating to look into someone else's life. It's not just another world, it's their view of an entirely different world. But tragically many things are still the same
