I closed the last page and just want to sit with all the feelings and with such a heavy heart.

A quiet book with an emotional depth that will linger with you for days.

Gah. Heartbreaking.

This is a moving graphic novel, telling the story of a family separated by the Korean war. It's spoiled a little bybthe messy, inconsistent drawing and I was a little thrown by the afterword in which buts explained that it's a fictional account, based in real events, which is certainly not how I'd been understanding it up to that point, and then I didn't know what was true and what not. Still a useful book especially if you don't know much about the period.

This was a really engaging read but idk something felt just slightly off with it. I think maybe it was the transitions between present day and the past in the story. The note from the author at the end was incredibly impactful. However I really didn’t like the ending.
It ends with the old woman falling while trying to pick up a call from her daughter and then transitions into some images that seem related to earlier in the book. The grandmother falling is devastating but the images that follow don’t tell a clear story. Plus her fall feels like an unsatisfying ending that leaves the story open, although maybe that’s intentional as the wound of the pain caused by the split is still open.
