Anywho, this is otherwise such a good ending to this trilogy. I love that there's an element that still echos the Games with the pods. Blaine hates the love triangle in this one and how distraught Katniss is throughout, but I don't think that's at all fair. She's been through so freaking much and the hits keep coming as she witnesses more death and destruction, all the while again being forced to be the face of something, being left out of decisions, being used for some greater good that doesn't feel exactly "good," more like the lesser of two evils. That right there is why I love that she
I think the way her feelings for Peeta progress make a lot of sense. She's never really been in a position to think much about her true feelings for him, not until he's complete changed and she sees just how much she's taken him for granted and how much she loves these parts of him. I also think his damage matches hers. They're both irrevocably changed, and they're definitely the only two people in the world who understand that.
Lastly, the scenes shooting the promos are some of my absolute favorites. I especially love the one after
Overall, this series as a whole has held up believably well, and I'm so glad I have my own copies once more so I can read them all over again and again 💙
Quotes:
- "I want to tell the people that if you think for one second the Capitol Will treat us fairly if there's a ceasefire, you are diluting yourself. Because you know who they are and what they do." My hands go out automatically, as if to indicate the whole horror around me. "This is what they do! And we must fight back!"
I'm moving in toward the camera now, carried forward by my rage. "President Snow says he's sending us a message? Well, I have one for him. You can torture us and bomb us and burn our districts to the ground, but do you see that?" One of the cameras follows as I point to the planes burning on the roof of the warehouse across from us. The Capitol seal on a wing glows clearly through the flames. "Fire is catching!" I'm shouting now, determined that he will not miss a word. "And if we burn, you burn with us!" (99-100)
Rereads:
Oh, this series 🔥 This book hits just as hard on a reread, especially after having read Ballad and Sunrise.
New quotes:
- Maybe it's because I still have the ashes of my own district on my shoes, but for the first time, I give the people of 13 something I have withheld from them: credit. For staying alive against all odds. (29)
- Frankly, our ancestors don't seem much to brag about. I mean, look at the state they left us in, what with the wars and the broken planet. Clearly, they didn't care about what would happen to the people who came after them." (84)
- The damage, the fatigue, the imperfections. That's how they recognize me, why I belong to them. (90)
- I think that Peeta was on to something about us destroying one another and letting some decent species take over. Because something is significantly wrong with a creature that sacrifices its children's lives to settle its differences. You can spin it any way you like.... But in the end, who does it benefit? No one. The truth is, it benefits no one to live in a world where these things happen. (377)
- "Now we're in that sweet period where everyone agrees that our recent horrors should never be repeated," he says. "But collective thinking is usually short-lived. We're fickle, stupid beings with poor memories and a great gift for self-destruction. Although who knows? Maybe this will be it, Katniss.... The time it sticks." (379)
